Building Bridges between Law, Operations, and Education
With a career built at the crossroads of law, finance, nonprofit leadership, and education technology, Joe Rearden is guided by a belief that education is one of the most powerful tools for expanding opportunity. Beginning in the nonprofit sector, moving through finance roles in the software industry, and later practicing corporate law at major Boston firms, Rearden developed a broad strategic lens that naturally positioned him for operational leadership. That path ultimately led him to roles where legal insight, financial stewardship, and mission-driven impact converge. “Education is in my DNA—my mother was a teacher and my father literally built schools,” shares Rearden. “Philosophically, I believe education is the best way to help others, because all boats are lifted when we have an educated populace. Whatever I can do to contribute, I’m happy to be part of that.”
Earlier in his career, Rearden served as Chief Financial Officer and General Counsel at Edge, where he played a central role in scaling annual revenue from $5 million to more than $20 million. He later became the founding President of Core Education, where he guided the organization’s growth by aligning revenue strategy, legal oversight, and operational execution to position it for its next phase of expansion. Today, Rearden leads legal strategy at Panopto, where he has served as Head of Legal since November 2023.
“The current generation has grown up learning through video. Whether it’s TikTok, YouTube, or Panopto content, video has become a primary way people engage with information. At Panopto, we’re not just capturing lectures; we’re making content accessible anytime, anywhere. That’s why we’re expanding beyond traditional captioning to more robust audio descriptions, so that everyone, regardless of ability, can fully experience the material. Our goal is to break down education into chunks to support innovative learning models and make education truly inclusive.”
Accelerating Learning and Expanding Access
At Panopto, Rearden leverages his deep experience in higher education and consortium agreements to navigate complex contracts and accelerate deals in a sector where relationships matter more than traditional sales tactics. “One of the reasons I was brought to Panopto was my experience in higher education, not just selling to universities, but building the relationships that make complex agreements work,” says Rearden. “Consortium agreements, like those on EdgeMarket, let us move at lightning speed. What might take nearly a year with one school can now close in a matter of months, which is a gamechanger for higher ed.”
Rearden now leads Panopto’s legal strategy at a time when the platform is rapidly expanding its capabilities and navigating the intersection of education, technology, and AI innovation. “Part of what makes my role unique is understanding the technology itself, which isn’t something every lawyer does,” Rearden explains. “Panopto has evolved from a lecture capture system into a platform that uses AI to support personalized learning. With tools to create AI video content and core capabilities like interactive quizzes and intelligent search, Panopto is making it easier to create accessible, more engaging video content at scale.
“One of the things I’ve always valued, back at Edge and now at Panopto, is meeting people where they are. It’s not only the big universities like Princeton or Rutgers. The real opportunity is to help community colleges and smaller schools that wouldn’t otherwise have access to the latest tools. Providing them with these resources can have a ripple effect, benefiting the students, the local communities, and ultimately society at large. From the vendor side, my perspective has only grown. Platforms like EdgeMarket make it possible to respond to a single RFP and have it available across multiple institutions. That kind of efficiency, especially for schools that don’t have big procurement teams, is transformative. It’s exciting to see how these partnerships expand access and make a real difference.
“EdgeMarket is powerful in how it simplifies procurement for institutions. For example, we’d been trying to work with a very prestigious university for a couple of years. They loved the technology during pilots but didn’t want to go through a full bid process. I mentioned that we were on EdgeMarket, and the head of procurement immediately recognized it. Using that contract vehicle allows Panopto to pay a small admin fee to Edge, and in return, we gain access and avoid an enormous amount of work on the vendor side. It’s invaluable.”

Shaping the Next Era of Education
Having experience on both sides of the table, Rearden sees immense value in consortium organizations like Edge, which act not just as aggregators but as advocates and facilitators for collaboration among educational institutions. “I still firmly believe in the mission of Edge and similar organizations,” Rearden says. “They provide much more than just a network; they offer a forum for schools to connect, share challenges, and solve problems together. At Edge, it wasn’t about formal votes or committees; it was relaxed and practical. Schools could say, ‘Here’s a problem I’m facing,’ and someone else had already solved it. That kind of collaboration became even more critical during COVID, when we could quickly leverage things like Zoom licenses and share solutions across campuses. Without these consortiums, higher education would be navigating these challenges entirely alone.”
Looking ahead, Rearden sees a future in which video-based learning and accessibility will play an increasingly central role in education, reshaping how knowledge is delivered and consumed. “The current generation has grown up learning through video. Whether it’s TikTok, YouTube, or Panopto content, video has become a primary way people engage with information. At Panopto, we’re not just capturing lectures; we’re making content accessible anytime, anywhere. Bridging Law and Leadership
For legal professionals aspiring to step into strategic operational roles, Rearden says understanding the business, building strong relationships, and embracing continuous learning are just as important as mastering the law. “For anyone looking to move from legal practice into operational leadership, my first piece of advice is to understand the business, not just the legal language. It’s important to know why we’re doing something, which points matter, and where flexibility can help move the deal forward. Constant learning is key. My team members are always pursuing certifications, whether in privacy, compliance, or emerging fields. Finally, make human connections. Face-to-face time builds trust in ways that virtual meetings often do not. Those relationships are invaluable as you navigate complex operational and strategic challenges.
“Mentoring also goes hand-in-hand with leadership. When I was at Core Education, part of my role was setting the culture, including defining the mission, identifying people who believed in it, and bringing them on board. That foundation made scaling the organization possible and ensured that when leadership transitioned, the values remained intact. Strategic roles aren’t just about decisions, they’re about people, relationships, and building something that lasts. At the end of the day, the impact you leave isn’t measured by transactions or titles; it is measured by the people you empower and the lasting difference you make for the people you guide today and the ones who will follow in your footsteps.”
