NJEdge and Amazon Web Services Collaborate to Create Dedicated Express Lane for New Jersey Schools

Newark, NJ, February 28, 2018 – NJEdge has collaborated with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to form a new alliance that allows direct connection between the NJEdge state-wide optical fiber research and education network and AWS. NJEdge members can now leverage existing NJEdge connections or create new ones through AWS Direct Connect at a significantly reduced expense.

Faculty, students and researchers at NJEdge member schools now have direct access to AWS tools and services for education purposes. AWS allows users to accelerate cloud-based learning endeavors and research initiatives.

“This collaboration with Amazon Web Services is an exciting win for NJEdge and, more importantly, our member schools. Members will now have full and direct access to many technologies that are rapidly developing, or have yet to be developed, as well as the many innovative services and products available from AWS,” said Dr. Samuel Conn, President and CEO of NJEdge.

Using AWS Direct Connect and the NJEdge network, member schools will be able to establish private connectivity between AWS and their datacenter, office, or colocation environment. This service allows members to extend their datacenter onto the cloud and access resources such as Amazon EC2, Amazon RDS, and VMware on AWS. In many cases, these connections can reduce costs, increase bandwidth throughput, and provide a more consistent on-demand network experience.

“The availability of cloud computing and artificial intelligence technologies will greatly benefit students and educators in New Jersey, particularly those from underserved and disadvantaged populations,” said Dr. Steven Rose, NJEdge Board Chair and President of Passaic County Community College in New Jersey. “NJEdge’s alliance with Amazon Web Services will  provide cost-effective access to AWS advanced computer and storage infrastructure via NJEdge’s high-performance, research and education network.”
