Finding Our Voice: Instructional Designers in Higher Education

NJEDge.Net held its first instructional design workshop last summer. We are a member-driven organization which provides opportunities for professional development for our members and with our members.  Sandra L. Miller, deputy CIO and director of Instruction & Research Technology at William Paterson University, and Gayle Stein, associate director for Instructional Technology at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey  and Sheri Prupis, NJEDge’s Vice President of Academic and Community Engagement, planned an event where instructional designers, technologists, faculty and professional staff participate in an intense workshop. The workshop was led by Drs. Stein and Miller, sponsored by NJEDge and hosted at Rutgers.

Based on the input from participants of the workshop and their recent research on instructional designers/technologists in higher education, Drs. Miller and Stein collaborated on a write-up of their findings, and on February 8th, Educause Review published their article in its Why IT Matters in Higher Education section.  The write-up explains what exactly is it that Instructional Designers/Technologists do? It discusses skill sets, pedagogy, and teaching innovations.
